Malayala Kalagramam (Art
Centre)
29 kms from Kannur, this renowned centre for arts and culture at New Mahe,
conduct courses in painting, sculpture, music, dance, art and pottery.
Tellicherry (Small Famous Town)
20 kms from Kannur, Tellicherry is a small famous town from where most of
India's circus artists come. German missionaries introduced the gymnastic
tradition in school here. Rev. Herman Gundert spent a lifetime here around
Tellicherry in his educational and literary work. He also built a church
on Nettur Hill in 1889.
Valapattanam (Industrial Town)
7 kms from Kannur, the small town on the River Valapattam is well known
for its wood-based industries and timber trade. The port of Azhikkal and
Azhikkal beach are located nearby. Western India plywood's limited, the
largest wood-based industry in the country and also one of the biggest of
its kind in South East Asia, is a major industrial concern here.
Ezhimala (Hillock)
55 kms from Kannur town, at a height of 885 feet is Ezhimala, an isolated
but conspicuous cluster of hills. At the foot of the hill are a cave and
an old burial chamber. Further up the hills is an ancient mosque where
beautiful sculptured stone pillars are seen. The combination of high hills
and the sandy beach nearby makes Ezhimala a lovely picnic spot. This
hillock and its surrounding areas are well known for a rare medicinal herb
used for Ayurvedic formulations. This wonderful hilly place has been
identified for a million rupee projects to house the Country's and Asia's
largest Naval Academy.
Alaram Wildlife
Sanctuary
Alaram Wildlife Sanctuary is a situated on the slopes of the Western Ghats.
Found in this tranquil sanctuary is elephants, sloth bears, sambar and
mouse deer as well as fauna and reptiles.
The highest peak of Katti Betta, covered with tropical and semi- evergreen
forests rises to a majestic height of 1145 m above sea level.
Pappinisserry
16 kms from Kannur town, the snake park here houses about 150 varieties of
snakes including the Spectacled Cobra, King Cobra, Russell Viper, Krait
and Pit Viper. There is also a large collection of non-poisonous snakes
including Pythons.
A research laboratory to extract venom from snakes is proposed to be set
up here. The park is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of
snakes, many species of which are getting extinct gradually.
Parassinikkadavu (Snake
Park)
Parassinikkadavu Snake Park signifies the great role played by Snakes in
keeping the ecology of nature. The park is dedicated to preservation and
conservation of snakes, most of which are getting extinct gradually. It
has many snake pits and glass cases especially made only for king Cobras.
In all there are about 150 snakes including spectacled Cobras, Monosialed
Cobras, Russell, Vipers, Pit Viper and three magnificent king cobras.
There is also a large collection of poisonous snakes and large Pythons.
Pythal Mala (Hill Station)
65 kms from Kannur town, this enchanting hill station, situated 4,500 feet
above sea level near the Kerala-Karnataka border, is rich in flora and
fauna. It is a 6 km. trek to the top of the hills. Dharmadam Island
About 3 kms from Thalassery lays the small island of 'Dharmadam'. This
tiny 5-acre island is covered with coconut palms and green bushes, which
is a beautiful sight from the beach. A bus ride from Thalassery will take
one to the place of destination but permission is required to enter this
privately owned island. This place was earlier known as Dharmattanam,
getting its name from the popular belief that it was a Buddhist monastery
earlier, as Buddha's images are said to been excavated from this place.
Ezhimala Beach
The Ezhimala Beach lies at the northern boundary of Kannur. Rare medical
herbs (Ramayana) with mythological significance grow on Ezhimala, the
strange seven-peaked range. Around 50 kms from here, is the Mount Deli
Lighthouse, an old tower of great antiquity. It's maintained by the Navy
and is a restricted area. The beach sand is of a different texture and the
sea is bluer that in other areas. At the Ettikulam bay one could enjoy
watching dolphins. Kizhunna Beach
11 Kms from Kannur, This beautiful stretch of sand is one of the most
secluded beaches in Kerala. Muzhappilangad Beach
Muzhappilangad Beach, one of the longest beaches in Kerala is located 15
kms south of Kannur. This is the only drive-in beach in India.
Moppila Bay
This is a natural fishing harbour situated near St.. Angelo's Fort. A sea
wall extending to a huge height, projecting from the fort separates the
rough sea and inland water. Mechanised and country crafts can enter into
the island from the sea and anchor safely.
Payyambalam Beach
2kms from Kannur, Payyambalam, the long, lovely beach is a local picnic
spot. Flat laterite cliffs jut into the sea at one end. Picturesque and
incredibly beautiful, the beach is only walking distance from Fort St.
Angelo. It is an ideal place to spend evenings, irrespective of seasons,
because of its quiet and calm environment.
Gundert Bungalow
(Historical Monument)
20 kms from Kannur, near Thalasseri town, on the National Highway at
Lillykunnu, is the big ancient bungalow of Dr. Hermant Gundert, the
revered German priest and research scholar who lived here for 20 years
from 1839.It was here that the first Malayalam-English dictionary and the
first Malayalam newspaper "Paschimodayam" took it's shape. There
is also a mosque close by at Madayi, which was constructed in 1124,using
marble brought from Mecca. These two historic monuments attract a number
of tourists.
Mahe
Between Tellicherry and Badagara is Mahe, a small beautiful trading town
on the west coast established by the French in the 17th century. It is
under the administrative control of the union territory of Pondicherry and
several historical hangovers of French influence are evident.
Pazhazzi dam
37 kms East of Kannur near Mattannur, the Pazhassi is an ideal retreat for
tourists, the dam site is famous for its scenic beauty. The Buddha's
mountain at Pazhassi and the sculpture of Pazhassi King are visual
delights.
Arakkal Palace
3 kms from Kannur, is a beautiful palace of the former Arakkal Ali Rajas,
the only Muslim royal family of Kerala that controlled parts of the coast
and Lakshadweep.
Chirakkal (Palace)
6 kms from Kannur, this palace is famous for the palace of the Kolathiri
Raja
St.Angelo's Fort
The first Portuguese Viceroy Don Francisco De Almedia, on a high land
jutting out into the Lakshadweep Sea, constructed a huge triangular
structure built with laterite, called St. Angelo's fort, in 1505 A.D. In
1663,the Dutch captured the fort but in 1790, it came into the possession
of the British. The British rebuilt it and made it their important
military centre in Malabar. The fort is now a protected monument under the
Archaeological survey of India, which offers fascinating views of Mappila
bay fishing harbour and Dharmadam Island.
Tellicherry Fort
22 kms from Kannur, the fort constructed in 1708,was the military centre
of the British and is now a historical monument. The S.A.I. Gymnastic
Centre, an old Muslim Mosque, the Jagannatha temple and the Thiruvangadi
Sree Rama Swami temple are other
